Improvisations Live in Germany
YOUNEE bringt wieder zusammen, was jahrzehntelang zusammengehörte.
A Masterpiece of Improvisational Art: “Improvisations Live in Germany”
With her third album, South Korean pianist and composer Younee celebrates a brilliant return and reveals the full force of her extraordinary gift for free improvisation. “Improvisations Live in Germany” is a vivid testament to Younee’s musical journey and her relentless pursuit of artistic freedom and innovation.
Recorded at venues across Germany, the album captures the magic of unique performance moments — moments that can never be recreated in quite the same way. Every piece is shaped by the atmosphere of the occasion, the energy of the audience, the acoustics of the venue and, above all, the individual character of the piano itself.
With remarkable creativity and dynamic energy, Younee moves effortlessly across the boundaries between Classical Music and Jazz, creating a distinctive musical language of her own: Free Classic & Jazz.
“Improvisations Live in Germany” offers a fascinating insight into Younee’s artistry and reveals just how deep, immediate and moving improvised music can be. The recordings were made using a specially designed microphone system that places the listener remarkably close to the experience of the pianist — almost as though sitting at the piano alongside Younee.
When Younee performed at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, she improvised on the theme of “Spring”, a cue spontaneously called out by a member of the audience. At Jazzopen Stuttgart, she captivated the audience with “Song for JOS”. At the Hamburger Fabrik, the word “Freude” — meaning “joy” — became the starting point for an entirely new improvisation.
“Cuba”, recorded at the Ofenwerk in Nuremberg, sounds as though Younee has just returned from Havana, even though she has never been to Cuba. “Crazy Night in Lichtenfels” emerged spontaneously during a town festival in the Upper Franconian town known for its basket-making tradition.
And which Jazz club can claim to have its own original Younee composition? The legendary Unterfahrt in Munich can.
“From Korea to Bach” is autobiographical, while “Left-Hand Improvisation”, recorded at the Palatia Jazz Festival in Speyer, points towards the possibilities of new playing techniques. “Instrument Is Alive” is a true Fantasie Impromptu, inspired by a visit to an Instrument Museum. Younee imagined the instruments coming to life and dancing together after the visitors had left.
Classical Music remains an important source of inspiration for Younee. Her “Bright Moonlight”, recorded at the International St. Wendel Jazz Days, was inspired by Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” — a work Beethoven himself described as a “Sonata quasi una Fantasia”.
Younee’s music is exemplary of the postmodern spirit of the 21st century. She approaches the concert experience differently, creating new settings and spaces in which music can be experienced in a new way and where musicians and audiences meet on equal terms.
For Younee, music is always a form of communication. Her spoken introductions and the titles she gives her pieces serve as invitations into the music — a point of entry, a guide, and sometimes a glimpse into the thought behind the improvisation.
Her approach to improvisation demands an almost instinctive sensitivity: an acute awareness of the situation, an immediate response to what is happening around her and an extraordinary certainty of reaction. Above all, Younee’s music depends on imagination.
Yet the listener always senses that improvisation is not simply a device or a safety net for Younee. It is the very means through which she expresses her personal relationship with music. She plays what she feels in the moment, allowing each performance to unfold according to the atmosphere, the piano, the audience and the inspiration of that particular instant.
For Younee, the piano is far more than an instrument. It is a musical partner, a companion and a friend.
“Improvisations Live in Germany” explores both the role of improvisation and its deep connection with musical tradition. In Younee’s music, these two worlds come together naturally. For her, improvisation and composition are not opposites, but two sides of the same creative process.
The album ultimately reflects what lies at the heart of Younee’s artistry: music that is created in the moment, rooted in tradition, yet completely free to become something new.
Reviews
“The mature and full sound, the great timing and the seemingly unlimited improvisational skills of this wonderful artist make this album a great work of improvisational art.”

즉흥예술의 걸작: 「Improvisations Live in Germany」 — Younee
Jazzopen Stuttgart에서는 “Song for JOS”로 관객을 사로잡았다.
“From Korea to Bach”는 Younee 자신의 이야기를 담은 자전적인 작품이다.
“Instrument Is Alive”는 말 그대로 하나의 진정한 Fantasie Impromptu다.
